冠詞 (article) は、日本語にない概念です。a, the, 何もつけない（無冠詞）の3つから選びます。
冠詞は3択です
a / an — 「ひとつの」「ある〇〇」。聞いている側がどれか特定できないもの。
the — 「あの」「その」「例の」。お互いにどれか分かっているもの。
何もつけない（無冠詞） — 概念全体、一般論として話すとき。
日本語で「猫が好きです」と言うとき、冠詞の判断は不要です。英語ではそうはいきません。
I like a cat. — ある1匹の猫が好き。ちょっと不自然。
I like the cat. — あの猫が好き。文脈次第であり得る。
I like cats. — 猫という動物が好き。普通はこれ。
a / an
聞いている側がまだ特定できないものを指す時に使います。
I saw a dog in the park. — 公園で犬を見かけた。どの犬かは相手にはわからない。
She is a teacher. — 彼女は教師です。
Can I have a cup of coffee? — コーヒーを1杯ください。
a と an の使い分けは、次の単語が母音の音で始まるかどうか。スペルではなく音です。an apple, an hour（hは発音しない）、a university（uの音がユ＝子音）。
数えられない名詞 (water, information, advice, music など) には a/an はつきません。× I need an information → ◯ I need information
the
話し手と聞き手の両方が「どれか」分かっているものに使います。
I saw a dog in the park. The dog was very friendly. — さっき言った犬。2回目の言及。
Could you close the door? — そのドア。目の前にある。
The sun rises in the east. — 太陽。1つしかない。
the が必要になる場面:
- 2回目の言及（さっき言ったやつ）
- 状況から明らか（目の前にある、1つしかない）
- 修飾語で限定されている（the book that I borrowed）
- 最上級（the best, the tallest）
無冠詞
特定の個体ではなく、カテゴリや概念全体を指す時。
I like music. — 音楽が好き。音楽という概念全体。
Water is essential for life. — 水は生命に不可欠。水という物質全般。
Dogs are loyal animals. — 犬は忠実な動物。犬というカテゴリ全体。
食事 (breakfast, lunch, dinner) とスポーツ名も無冠詞。I had breakfast. I play soccer. ただし楽器は the がつきます。I play the piano.
固有名詞と冠詞
the がつく: the United States, the United Kingdom, the Nile, the Pacific Ocean, the Alps, the New York Times
the がつかない: Japan, France, Mount Fuji, Lake Biwa, Tokyo Station, Harvard University
go to school と go to the school
go to school — 通学する（学校の本来の目的で行く）
go to the school — その学校の建物に行く（保護者が面談で行くなど）
同じパターン: go to bed（寝る）vs go to the bed、go to church（礼拝に行く）vs go to the church。the がつくと「建物」、つかないと「本来の機能」。
よく見る間違い
× I like the music. → ◯ I like music.（一般論なら無冠詞）
× I need an information. → ◯ I need information.（不可算名詞）
× She is teacher. → ◯ She is a teacher.（職業の前の a）
× I had the breakfast. → ◯ I had breakfast.（食事名は無冠詞）
× by the bus → ◯ by bus（by＋交通手段は無冠詞）
× This is best movie. → ◯ This is the best movie.（最上級は the）
× Internet changed our lives. → ◯ The internet changed our lives.
× The happiness is important. → ◯ Happiness is important.（抽象概念は無冠詞）
