Past Simpleは高校の英語で教わる「過去形」です。過去形は、動詞の形が過去形という形に変化します。それで、文字通り過去の出来事を示します。
基本ルール
過去形には、edが後ろに付くRegular verb(規則動詞)と、不規則に形がかわるIrregular verb(不規則動詞)があります。基本的に、過去形の場合、動詞の形は、主語 (I/ he, she /it/we/they)によって動詞の形を変える必要はないです。(現在形の場合だけ、he/she/it の場合のみ 動詞に”s”をつけます)。
Regular Verb (規則動詞)の場合、最後にedをつける。ただし、to studyなどの最後に “y”がつく動詞は、studiedになる。
例：
- I visited Australia last year. (動詞 visitに、edをプラス)
- I played piano when I was a child (動詞 play + ed)
- I studied mass media and communication when I was in the U.S. (study + ed)
Irregular verb (不規則動詞)の場合は、過去形になるとそれぞれ形が変わる。
- I bought a hoody parker at the department store. (buy => bought)
- It cost like a 7000 yen, and it was expensive. (costの過去形 => cost)
- I went school yesterday, and nobody was there. I did not know it was Sunday. (goの過去形)
- I got a straight “A” on Introduction to economics but I got an “F” on English class. (getの過去形)
Questions(疑問形)と Negative sentences (否定形)
疑問文は、助動詞Doを使用する。過去形なので、助動詞Do => Didになる。
助動詞が付く場合は、edをとって（原型)という形に戻す。
- Do you go to school? => Did you go to school yesterday? (Did you wentではない)
- Do they have a good time? => Did they have a good time? (Did they hadではない)
- Yes, they do./No, they don’t. => Yes, they did. / No, they did not.
- What did you do?!!!
- Where did professor go?
ただし、be動詞は違うルールに従う。過去形でも現在形でも形が変わる。日本語にはない概念で、状態を表す意味の「動詞」。
どういう時にPast Simpleで表現するのか
1. 過去のある時点で終了している出来事を表現する時
(Past simple is used when we talk about finished events in the past with no connection to the present)
- Leonardo painted the Mona Lisa. (レオナルドがモナリサを書いた。)
- The Vikings invaded Britain. (バイキングはイギリスを侵略した。)
2. Yesterday, last weekなど過去の時間を示す単語がある文
(We use past simple with a finished time word)
- I went to the cinema yesterday.
- We visited Japan in 2007.
3. 過去に起こった出来事を連ねて言う時
(We use it for stories / lists of events in the past.)
- He went to a cafe, sat down and lit a cigarette.
- Yesterday I went to the library, met a friend for lunch, and played tennis.
4. 既に起こった事件、ニュースの詳細を説明する時
- I’ve hurt my leg. I fell off a ladder when I was painting my bedroom.
- I’ve been on holiday. I went to Spain and Portugal.
